LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The Cal Poly men and UC Irvine women track & field teams have the lead after the first day of the 2025 Big West Championships main weekend, Friday at Long Beach State’s Jack Rose Track.
After seven events, the Mustangs lead the team scoring with 65 points, followed by Long Beach State with 52 and Cal State Fullerton 47.
On the women’s side, UC Irvine has pole position with 61.5 points, followed by Cal Poly with 57 and Long Beach State with 42.5 after seven events.
The day started with the men’s hammer throw as CSUN’s Trey Knight became a two-time Big West champion in the event with a toss of 73.11m/239’10”. Cal Poly went 2-3 with Travins Martin (70.80m/232’3”) and Rory Devaney (70.33m/230’9”0).
CSUN went 2-for-2 in the hammer throw as Summer Mosley won the women’s side of the competition with a mark of 59.66m/195’9”. UC Irvine’s Deana Davis (57.50m/188’7”) and Long Beach State’s Giszelle Hrehor (57.39m/188’3”) took silver and bronze, respectively.
CSUN’s Joey Nations won the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.53m/24’8.5” on the first attempt. Long Beach State took the next two spots with Aidan Turner (7.46m/24’5.75”) and Miguel Orozco (7.45m/24’5.5”).
UC San Diego’s Tamara Aimufia claimed gold in the women’s long jump with a mark of 6.08m/19’11.5” on attempt number one. Cal Poly’s Cadence Roy-Williams and Kylee Davis of UC Davis both had a throw of 6.07m/19’11”. Roy-Williams got the edge for second thanks to a farther second-best attempt.
Cal State Fullerton went 1-2 in the shot put with Hawkin Miller (18.61m/61’0.75”) and Brayden Bitter (18.22m/59’9.5”). The duo jumped to the top of the leaderboard on their final attempts. Cal Poly’s Corban Payne (18.08m/59’4”) finished third.
UC San Diego’s Feyi Olukanni (14.82m/48’7.5”) won the shot put with a mark of 14.82m/48’7.5” on the first-round throw. Long Beach State’s Maren Butler (14.80m/48’6.75”) and CSUN’s Emily Hutchinson (14.78m/48’6”) were second and third, respectively.
Long Beach State’s Kyle Jankans had the top clearance in the high jump at 2.11m/6’11”. Cal State Fullerton went 2-3 with both Sebastian Ikolo and Camren Willis clearing 2.06m/6’9”. Lilian Turban of Hawai‘i became a two-time Big West champion in the event with the top clearance of 1.81m/5’11.25”. UC Irvine took silver and bronze with Zharia Taylor (1.78m/5’10”) and Esmeray Demirbas (1.73m/5’8”), respectively.
Cal Poly’s Isabel Sanchez won the women’s 3000m steeplechase with a time of 10:41.52. UC Irvine’s Kaia Schmidt and UC San Diego’s Kelsie Yamano tied for second, both crossing the finish line in 10:43.51.
Cal Poly went 1-2 in the men’s 3000m steeplechase with Michael Chambers (8:42.35) and Bryce Kueker (8:47.62). UC Santa Barbara’s Parker Simmons was third at 8:48.88.
Dani Barrett of UC Davis won the 10000m in wire-to-wire fashion, finishing the 25-lap race in 34:28.43. The Cal Poly duo Hana Catsimanes (35:36.93) and Schuyler Gooley (35:36.96) were second and third, respectively.
Cal Poly’s Colton Swinth (29:20.69) won the 10000m by taking over on the final lap with a ferocious kick, fending off Muhammed Ahmed (29:21.74) of UC Davis and UC Riverside’s Ashraf Abdelmagid (29:23.23).
