Sea View League Finals Recap

11/09/2024

A significant shift took place Friday at the Sea View League finals at Irvine Regional Park, with Beckman having an impressive impact in its debut and Tesoro enjoying a triumphant return, resulting in both programs capturing individual and team championships.

Beckman, which won boys individual and team crowns last year in the Pacific Coast Conference, took advantage of the new setting and opportunities to sweep the top four spots – highlighted by sophomore Ryan Barris securing the individual title – and have all seven competitors place in the top 10 to prevail with 16 points.

Tesoro relied on juniors Mackenzie Forrest and Amber Dazey taking the top two spots, with the Titans placing five scorers in the top 11 to produce a 31-40 victory against Beckman, capturing their first Sea View League girls team championship since March 2021, following the cancellation of the 2020 fall season as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Mackenzie Forrest (11/8/2024)

Forrest, who took 10th in last year’s South Coast League final, became the first Tesoro female athlete since Amanda Gehrich in 2015 to capture the Sea View individual crown, clocking 17 minutes, 21 seconds on the 3-mile layout.

Dazey, who earned eighth in the South Coast League championship last season, was runner-up Friday in 17:23.4, with Dylan McGrew securing seventh in 18:20.6, Elena Popov placing 10th in 18:38.5 and Lily Garcia grabbing 11th in 18:42.0 for the Titans, who are scheduled to race Nov. 16 in the CIF-Southern Section Division 2 prelims at Mt. SAC.

Carol Dye, a sophomore for San Juan Hills, took third for the second year in a row, improving by more than 50 seconds from last season to run 17:56.3.

Beckman was led by freshman Emma Alba finishing fourth in 18:03.2, senior sister Jocelyn Alba placing fifth in 18:17.4 and junior Taylor Tam taking sixth in 18:18.7.

Rebecca Lopez, a freshman, achieved 12th in 18:55.1 and junior Gavriella Krause earned 13th in 19:00.2 for the Patriots, who are expected to compete Nov. 15 in the Southern Section Division 1 prelims at Mt. SAC.

Aliso Niguel’s Camila Abarca was eighth in 18:22.4 and Mission Viejo’s Lilyana Perez finished ninth in 18:32.0.

The Diablos prevailed on a sixth-runner tiebreaker against Aliso Niguel for third place after both lineups accumulated 96 points, with San Juan Hills right behind at 98 points.

There was no drama in the boys 3-mile final, despite the absence of Tesoro senior Griffin Kushen, as Barris clocked 14:29.7 for Beckman, followed by juniors Christian Weber (14:37.6) and Mason Nguyen (14:46.9), as well as senior Anthony Barrera (14:52.9).

Tesoro’s Chase Manning placed fifth in 14:57.9 to prevent the Patriots from achieving a perfect 15-point performance, but seniors Nathan Horrocks (15:08.0), Jude Tenorio (15:09.3) and Aaron Feaster (15:24.0) were sixth, eighth and 10th, respectively, for Beckman.

Ryan McNamara secured seventh in 15:09.1 for runner-up Tesoro, which had 50 points, and Nolan Calder achieved ninth in 15:14.5 for third-place San Juan Hills (79 points).

Mission Viejo was fourth at 108 points and Capistrano Valley finished fifth with 128 points.
