Roosevelt - Winter Qualifier Recap
On a great day in Eastvale on January 4, several hundred high school tracksters showed up looking to qualify for the Winter Championships at Arcadia High School, scheduled for February 8.
Senior Taye Newman led a pack of six to qualifying marks in the 3000 meters. With Newman coming off an impressive cross country season, posting the top mark so far at 8:59.01. He also showed that he has speed as he had the top mark at the meet in the 600 meters (1:24.11). This meet's boys 600 meter event had the most qualifiers with 12.
A triple qualifier on the day, Jack Stadlman qualified in the 60 meters (6.99), followed that in the 150 meters (16.03), and topped it off with the best mark so far in the 300 meters running a very impressive 33.47. And, showing it wasn't just a one-time thing, Stadlman ran 33.42 Dec. 7 at an all-comers meet at San Diego State University.
The boys pole vault also posted the top qualifying mark so far with two boys clearing 15 feet--David O'Brien on his second attempt and Michael Collen on his third. O'Brien was a Masters qualifier last season while Cullen was a State Finalist.
In the girls jumps, Ab Hernandez qualified with the second best triple jump mark of the season (37-10.75) and also the had the best long jump mark of the day (17-01.50). Daneira Pellum finished second in the long jump (16-08.50) and also had a qualifying mark in the high jump (4-11) matching Jaelyn Queen's mark in the event.
A very surprising outcome was that there was only one relay qualifier from this meet which usually has several throughout the events offered.
January 11 qualifiers will be held at Great Oak, Rancho Cucamonga and Yorba Linda high schools.
